Some measure wealth by the size of their wallet or numbers of zeros in their bank account; some by
their academic achievements, others by social status. We, however, measure wealth by the impact you leave
on a person and because of that, our mother was the richest and she passed that wealth onto us. For us to
love her is one thing, but to know she meant so much to so many speaks volumes. To know her is to love her; it
is to know kindness and giving. It is to know love (sometimes tough love), understanding, and forgiveness.
Momma wasn’t the perfect person, but she did the best she knew how and you could always count on her for
an open mind, listening ear, and loving heart. Cheryl, Momma, Ol Bird, Gracie, wife, sister, daughter, granny,
cousin, friend- whatever you preferred to call her, you knew she would take pride in the title and uphold that
role. As if raising us children (and our friends) wasn’t enough, she always took care of people. Whether it was
working in a restaurant, one of the many occupations she held at Jamestown Regional Medical Center, or
becoming a caregiver for the Huff family, serving others was her true calling and purpose in life. She made
this world more beautiful and she never even knew it. She was the strongest woman we knew. Always putting
everyone else first, taking care of us all, giving when there wasn’t much to give. She did it all with a smile on
her face. That’s another thing about her- she was a prankster! She was always being silly and tried to make
sure everyone else was smiling and laughing, too. If she was hurting and struggling, we rarely ever knew. The
last few years showed an inevitable decline in her health and she was less active than she once was. It’s been
tough to watch her go from enjoying some of her favorite things-playing in the yard with her kids and grand
kids, gardening, cooking feasts, listening to the radio, and taking care of everyone else to barely leaving the
house, losing interest in things that once brought her joy, a lack of mobility, and needing constant care. She
still persevered and fought through various illnesses and injuries like a champ, but she fell exceptionally ill a
few short months ago. After a long, treacherous struggle, she is no longer facing the worldly struggles that
burdened her for so long. While our hearts are hurting here on earth, I have faith in knowing she is eternally
healed and peacefully walking hand in hand with those who have left us all too soon. Until we meet again, keep
shining brightly, our beautiful mother; our angel. With much love, forever and always.
