Stephen Hugo Gernt was born September 8, 1942, to Ernst and Lois Pile Gernt in Allardt, Tennessee. He graduated from York Agricultural Institute in 1960, and then attended and graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1964. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree, he attended graduate school at East Tennessee State University, and after he had completed the course of study for a Masters’ Degree, he remained at East Tennessee State University and became a professor in the biology department. During his career, he taught a variety of courses related to the field of biology, and he continued working at this university until his retirement.
Steve, as he was known to all his friends, enjoyed the outdoors, and when he was not teaching, he spent much of his time in that environment. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and enjoyed bringing home his produce and ‘catch of the day” and preparing appetizing meals from the results of his endeavors. He also liked to cut his own wood and always kept an abundant supply on hand.
Steve is survived by his brother, Stewart Gernt, and wife, Brenda; niece, Kelly Atkinson, and her husband, Shane; great-nephew, Avery Tinsley; nephew, Derek Gernt, and wife, Allison; great-niece, Maci Gernt; great-nephew, Noah Gernt; sister-in-law, Sue Gernt; and special friends, Eric and Patti and their families.
